Helicopters & Crocodiles

7 days. New ECO-TRAINING tour in Yucatan Peninsula, Mexico. Helicopters, kayaking, night crocodiles psychology and behavior.

A while ago we met one interesting tropical veterinarian in Playa del Carmen - Manuel Carrera. Manuel spent over 40 years studying crocs of Mexico from Tampico to Banco Chinchorro. No wonder, when Steve Irwin came to Mexico, Manuel was in charge of teaching him on how to catch local crocodiles.

CROC-CALL

Manuel knows how to call crocs in their own language. This simple technique was surprisingly effective in Puerto Morelos (little village between Playa del Carmen and Cancun). When we came to the swamps of Puerto Morelos at night and Manuel made this sound, 3 big crocs swam right to us from distance of 100 meters.

VIRAL CROC CHASE

Many people know Manuel for his video of one big croc chasing one poor guy trying to swim away in Sian Kaan biosphere of Riviera Maya.

This video went viral overnight and was on all TV stations you could imagine.

Local population of these magnificent prehistoric animals is suffering. Locals kill them for skin, food and souvenirs for tourists.

Together with Manuel we decided to build new heli-tour-adventure, capturing, studying and releasing to help with preservation of local crocodiles population in Quintana Roo and Yucatan. We will teach our participants crocodiles psychology and behavior.

50% of tour profit will go towards establishing new biological reserve.

Day 1-3

Helicoptering out of Playa del Carmen to Rio Lagartos

We will fly out of Playa del Carmen and first stop of our croc-expedition will be national biosphere - Rio Lagartos.

Besides being popular among tourists for its thousands of pink flamingos, this beautiful national reserve is a birth place of 700 to 900 of Morelet's crocodiles. Here we will spend 2 nights with kayaks swimming among hundreds of these cute monsters.

Why at night? Crocodiles are night creatures. Their eyes have unique ability to see in almost complete darkness in full color. During the day special cells covered with pigment protect retina and during the night these cells withdraw providing crocs with a lot more light sensitivity.

Crocs are also very sensitive to any vibrations and have perfect hearing. At night they float at the surface of the water, almost completely submerged with only eyes elevated above the water.

Crystals inside their eyes reflect any incoming light and this is how we find them.

Crystals inside their eyes reflect any incoming light and this is how we find them: if you flash a light above the water in the area of crocodiles habitat, then we will see their shining eyes from distance up to 200 meters.

In Rio Lagartos there are areas where we can see literally hundreds of shining eyes at night.

Day 3-5

To Sian Ka'an

Our second stop will be "Sian Ka'an" - biosphere famous for its pristine mangrove lakes and channels. Habitat of thousands of birds, manatees, wild dolphins and of course our crocs!

Day 5-7

To Banco Chinchorro and back to Playa del Carmen

Third stop is atoll "Banco Chinchorro". This is the place of the largest habitat of salt water crocs. Here we can scuba dive and snorkel with them in relative safety side by side.
